Gyanlok Library
Where Padam Kumar Jain’s resilience and Pushpmala’s nurturing spirit converge to create a sanctuary for learning.
Knowledge for Everyone
Gyanlok Library stands as a warm tribute to Padam Kumar Jain’s unwavering commitment to knowledge and Pushpmala’s nurturing literary spirit. Once bound by the walls of a prison due to his political convictions, Padam later channeled his resilience into gathering a personal library that would become a cornerstone of the community.
Starting Strong with Hopes and Dreams
Together, Padam and Pushpmala transformed their collection into the Gyanlok Library, a sanctuary of learning that welcomed the public to partake in their literary wealth. The couple’s home in Dehradun became a cradle for this cultural gem, even as they faced the trials of financial restraint and the threat of displacement. Their devotion turned challenges into stepping stones, ensuring the library not only survived but thrived.
Curating knowledge from near & far
Books, carefully curated from hidden corners of scrap shops, became the soul of Gyanlok, reflecting Padam’s eclectic interests and his profound respect for the written word. Pushpmala, with her gentle grace and warm hospitality, made every visitor feel at home, serving teas and meals amidst rows of bound knowledge.
The Next Chapter
As Padam’s health waned, the question of Gyanlok’s future loomed. Yet, the library’s journey was to continue, finding a new home and wider audience at the LBS Academy in Mussoorie, preserving its essence for future scholars.
Pushpmala’s own journey with language and translation, which blossomed in the nurturing environment of Gyanlok, continued to enrich the library’s offerings. Her work, characterized by an intimate understanding of diverse dialects, spanned years and brought new dimensions to the library’s collection.

For love of learning
The warmth of Gyanlok Library—borne of the couple’s shared sacrifices and love for learning—remains a testament to their life’s work. It’s a narrative of love, not just for books, but for the enduring power of education and the community it fosters. Their legacy endures in every page housed within the library’s walls, and in every heart it touches.
